Hopton on Sea to Scratby

23rd October 2022 | Miles 11.7 | Elevation gain 128ft

An 11.5 mile walk up the coast from Hopton on Sea to Scratby, passing through Gorleston-in-Sea, then inland along the River Yare, crossing into Great Yarmouth, back to the coast, and then up the beach past Caister and California to finish at Scratby.
Getting there and back
From our accommodation in Gorleston, we caught the 1 Coastal Clipper for a short trip South to begin the day at Hopton. From the finish point at Scratby we caught the 1 Coastal Clipper bus back to Gorleston. Not easy to access by public transport - Greater Anglia trains runs from Liverpool Street to Great Yarmouth via a change at Norwich. The 1 Coastal Clipper bus runs from Fitzalan Close, a 6 minute 0.3 mile walk from Great Yarmouth station.
Weather conditions
Not lovely. It was drizzling most of the day with several heavy downpours. We were lucky with the first two heavy showers as we timed our arrival in Gorleston and then Great Yarmouth to coincide with a stop under shelter, but the third heavy downpour of the day attacked us as we walked up the beach past Caister. At least the wind was from the South and therefore on our backs most of the day.
Walking difficulty
Easy - though some sections on soft sand, and the inclement weather made for more difficult walking conditions

It's wet. Our first coast path day walking in proper rain, we should probably expect more!

That sky doesn't look good. Will we reach Gorleston before that rain reaches us?
Just about did it, takeaway bacon butties under shelter at Gorleston. Our cottage is only a few steps away but we mustn't be tempted!

Heading up the beach towards Caister and California. Heavy rain about to start, not a shelter in sight, we got very wet!
After the downpour, a rainbow!
