Burnham-On-Crouch to St Peter's Chapel
(Our overall day number 26 - Part of The KC3 ECP Leg 35 - Burnham-on-Crouch to Maldon)Burnham-On-Crouch to St Peter's Chapel
15th April 2023 | Miles 14.5 | Elevation gain 14ft
A 14.5 mile walk from Burnham-on-Crouch, out onto the sea wall and the turning north to walk up the coast of the Dengie Peninsula all the way to St Peter's Chapel. Busy and well trodden for a mile or so from Burnham, and then feeling increasingly remote.
Getting there and back
As far as we could tell, there is no public transport to anywhere close enough to St Peter's Chapel, so we parked one car in the Chapel car park and drove the other back to Burnham to start the walk (see main leg page for bus details).
Weather conditions
Partly sunny, high of 13 degrees, with light winds. The ground was quite wet underfoot in many places.
Walking difficulty
Easy - very flat - but this section is long, and the Dengie Peninsula is remote with very few opportunities to bail out. In addition, the path, which is mainly along the flood bank, was becoming overgrown in parts, even in mid-April, so could be tricky later in the summer. Beware of the adders!

With the prospect of a long first day ahead, we arrived in Burnham-on-Crouch the previous evening - here Ani is enjoying a rest!

Setting out from our accommodation in Burnham early on day 1 - by this time we had already dropped one of the cars up at the Chapel car park.

Conditions were chilly but very calm.

Heading out from Burnham.

We were soon on the sea wall alongside the River Crouch. Sea walls were to become very familiar over the next few days!

More sea wall! The path got a little more grassy the further we went from Burnham.

Day 1 refreshment stop after around 5 miles, sat atop a WW2 lookout point, protecting the entrance to The River Crouch at Holiwell Point.

Some quite welcome easy underfoot walking, somewhere between Holiwell Point and Howe Outfall.

... And more of the same.

The long grass eventually resulted in wet feet. We did wonder what this part of the path will be like later in the summer - could be overgrown?

We saw many butterflies on this stretch, including this fine specimen!

Lunch stop at Howe Outfall, after around 10 miles.

Ever hopeful Ani The Dog, waiting for her mid-walk cucumber snack!

Saltmarshes looking spectacular as usual.
