Whitburn Bents to Tynemouth

5th October 2024 | Miles 11.0 | Elevation gain 473ft

An 11 mile walk from Whitburn Bents to Tynemouth, initially along the tops of low cliffs, then some paths and promenade. We managed a brief walk up the beach at South Shields towards South Pier, before turning inland towards the ferry. On the North Shields side, the path runs through a trendy area with bars and restaurants (potentially good for a late lunch) before joining the River Tyne trail for a bit before turning north through Tynemouth
Getting there and back
We travelled to the start from our accommodation in Tynemouth - The 1 Coaster bus runs from Tynemouth to West Percy Street in North Shields, from where it's 0.5 miles to the ferry - however it can also be walked, and is around 35 mins / 1.7 miles from the southern end of Long Beach in Tynemouth to the ferry - which is what we did (additional mileage on top of the official 11). The ferry to South Shields runs every half hour 00, 30 past the hour. From South Shields, the E1, E2 or E6 runs from right by the ferry to East Street-Newark Drive (Whitburn Bents) and takes 36 mins. We walked back to Tynemouth, via the South Shields ferry (nb ferry timings much more restrictive on a Sunday)
Weather conditions
A lovely autumn day, mostly sunny and only light jackets required
Walking difficulty
Easy - mostly flat and quite few urban areas
