East Sleekburn to Lynemouth

8th October 2024 | Miles 9.1 | Elevation gain 392ft

Just over nine miles in wet weather, passing through some less scenic areas than previous days on this trip to the North East (based on the weather forecast, we had swapped days with the onward walk to Amble, so that we could walk up the fabulous beach north to Amble in sunny condition rather than rain!). Notwithstanding the conditions, there was plenty of interest on this stretch - after Cambois a brief dip inland to cross the weir, and then back to the coast, past a holiday park to reach Newbiggin-By-The-Sea hoping for a hot drink by then - not much open unfortunately on a wet October Tuesday, and the one beachfront cafe we did find wouldn't allow us inside with the dog, so we sat and shivered over a quick coffee before moving on. Around Beacon Point and past Lyne Sands, we reached the power station at Lynemouth, and then the end of our walk.
Getting there and back
We parked on the street in Lynemouth (Bridge Road) and caught the No 1 bus back through Ashington to the St John's Road stop in East Bedlington , from where it's about a five minute walk to reach the coast path near the Sleekburn Grange Farm
Weather conditions
Rainy - full wet gear required
Walking difficulty
Easy and mostly flat - just made a bit harder by the conditions

And it's weir

Spital Point
Coming into Newbiggin-by-the-Sea - still raining
Newbiggin-by-the-Sea - not much open on a Tuesday in October
Same could probably be said of most other pubs on this coast!

Circumnavigating the seaward side of the power station
Bit of beach, but our walk ends before that
The circumnavigation of the power station had some less attractive parts!

Finishing the day - just need to walk back up the road to Lynemouth
