Plymouth to Wembury

18th May 2025 | Miles 13.8 | Elevation gain 1630ft

Just under 14 miles, initially through urban Plymouth, under the Hoe, through the Marina, across the Laira Bridge, in plenty of time for a quick stop at Morrisons to stock up on snacks, around the three mile mark. Then it's four more miles to Mount Batten Point, we walked out to the end of the breakwater. After Mount Batten, we left urban Plymouth behind and it started to feel like we were on the South West Coast Path! Past a couple of picturesque bays and then it's quite big climb up to Staddon Heights, before descending towards Heybrook Bay. We had a planned stop for a big Sunday lunch at the Eddystone Inn (no food in our ultimate destination, Wembury, on a Sunday!). Full of roast beef and potatoes, we waddled the final two miles to our B&B at Wembury.
Getting there and back
Public transport is challenging in this part of South Devon, so we did the entire section between Plymouth and Dartmouth point to point. We caught the train from Paddington to Plymouth, walked to Wembury, Challaborough, Salcombe, Beesands and finally Dartmouth. We caught the bus to Totnes and then the train back to Paddington. We used the very reliable Luggage Transfers to move our bags each day, and carried day packs. We stayed in accommodation listed in the SWCPA official guide (you get a free copy if you join the association).
Weather conditions
Wonderful sunny weather with a light breeze - perfect walking conditions
Walking difficulty
Easy - though there is a climb up to Staddon Heights, this is a comparatively less challenging section of the SWCP
