Beesands to Dartmouth

23rd May 2025 | Miles 11.3 | Elevation gain 2013ft

Just over eleven miles, initially along the beach, over a hump between Beesands and Torcross, and then more beach on Slapton Sands up to Strete. There's a big descent to reach Blackpool Sands, but then right back up, leaving the actual coast behind, into Stoke Fleming. The path rejoins the coast at Warren Point and from there it's round a couple of headlands to reach Dartmouth Castle and then descend into Dartmouth to finish the walk, and this whole leg, in time for a celebratory beverage.
Getting there and back
Public transport is challenging in this part of South Devon, so we did the entire section between Plymouth and Dartmouth point to point. We caught the train from Paddington to Plymouth, walked to Wembury, Challaborough, Salcombe, Beesands and finally Dartmouth. We caught the bus to Totnes and then the train back to Paddington. We used the very reliable Luggage Transfers to move our bags each day, and carried day packs. We stayed in accommodation listed in the SWCPA official guide (you get a free copy if you join the association).
Weather conditions
Wonderful sunny weather - blue skies with a light breeze - perfect walking conditions
Walking difficulty
Moderate - easy-ish start to the day with a bit of a hump between Beesands and Torcross, followed by a stretch up Slapton Sands that's flat but not particularly easy as it's shingly or sandy in places. After four miles, at Strete Gate, the path climbs up to 370 ft and then back to sea level at Blackpool Sands. There are succession of sharp climbs and descents all the way to Dartmouth

The story of our day in photos

Heading out of Beesands
This is the 'hump' between Beesands and Torcross (actually quite steep!)
Looking over Torcross towards Slapton Sands
Shingle on Slaton Sands. These days we'd do almost anything to avoid walking on shingle, but the path the other side of the road didn't have a sea view!
Looking back towards Slapton Sands - after the ascent up from Strete Gate
Looking towards Dartmouth - it's round the corner after the second last headland. The far headland is Froward Point - we walked that section in October 2023
Steep down, followed by a steep up
Tired legs - over 60 miles on this trip so far 😅
Blackpool Sands
Two miles to go!!
Dartmouth is round there somewhere
Coming round past the castle
Nearly finished - the lovely Dartmouth Harbour
Looking across to Kingswear
The ferry to Kingswear
Defending the harbour mouth!
Oops, not sure what happened here but it doesn't look good - on the front at Dartmouth
