Sea Palling to Overstrand

23rd June 2022 | Miles 15.5 | Elevation gain 817ft

A 15.5 mile walk along the Norfolk Coast, initially along the beach at low tide and then some cliff tops around Happisburgh, then along the beach all the way to Mundesley. The last five miles of the walk up to Overstrand are primarily cliff top walking.
Getting there and back
We parked at the Mundesley Beach car park, close to the Esplanade bus stop. From here we caught the number 34 bus to Sea Palling (this runs irregularly and only weekdays). We walked back through Mundesley and on for another five miles to the Coast Road bus stop between Sidestrand and Overstrand (this bus stop is on the coast path). From here we caught the CH2 Coasthopper bus back to Mundesley to pick up our car. To use public transport for a one day walk, catch the train from Norwich to North Walsham, and then the 34 bus to Sea Palling. At the end of the day, catch the CH2 bus back to Cromer from where the train runs to Norwich.
Weather conditions
Dry and pleasantly warm, the temperature rose to around 20 degrees after lunch, and there was a light wind from the North West, that became a little stronger later in the day.
Walking difficulty
Easy - though 'moderate' for us because it was a hot day and we were rushing for a bus at the end of 15 miles. Reasonably flat most of the way, with some short climbs up to cliff tops. Where the walk was on the beach, low tide made for easy wet sand walking, with a bit of more challenging shingle once the tide began to advance.

We couldn't walk up the top of the beach here, but neither could we leave the beach because of the gas distribution plant at Paston. We had to walk close to the water...
... and the tide was coming in fast - time for some striding!
No way up those cliffs so it was a race against the advancing tide
The tide lashing the sea defences
... which were keeping us dry
Well deserved refreshments at The Ship Inn at Mundesley after winning the race against the tide

The radar station at RAF Trimingham - this is losing the battle against the crumbling cliffs and will have to be moved inland very soon
Lovely cliff top scenery, heading out of Trimingham towards Overstrand and the end of the day's walk. We found ourselves in a rush to get the bus, and so this was a march (second one of the day!)
On the bus back to Mundesley to pick up the car. There was a 100 metre sprint to the bus stop, most unwelcome at the end of this very long 15 mile day!
The spectacular sunset (and the moon) from No 1 Cromer Fish & Chip restaurant. Full debrief on bus planning underway!
Followed by a beer at the Red Lion, complete with its motivational (?) messages. Perhaps we all needed this after the long day...
