Clovelly to Hartland Quay
(Our overall day number 33 - Part of The KC3 ECP Leg 4b - Braunton to Hartland Quay)Clovelly to Hartland Quay
23rd May 2023 | Miles 10.0 | Elevation gain 2726ft
A 10.0 mile walk, leaving Clovelly, and soon upping and downing wooded valleys, but after three miles or so, emerging onto the open rolling cliff tops, with brilliant views for the next four miles to Hartland Point. Rounding the point, the landscape changes and the final three miles to Hartland Quay are full of weird and wonderful rock formations, with some steep and rocky ascents.
Getting there and back
We used two cars for this stretch - Hartland Quay is not served by any public transport (the closest the bus goes is Hartland, a couple of miles away down some narrow lanes), so two cars was our option once again. There is parking above the Hartland Quay Hotel, which we parked in for free, when we left our car there early in the morning, however a later arrival may result in getting stopped on the entry road by an attendant levying a parking charge!
Weather conditions
It was overcast for most of the day, which made for slightly cooler walking conditions.
Walking difficulty
Leaving Clovelly, the first wooded section has sharp ascents and descents, and then after a few miles opens out onto open cliff top, where the ups and downs become less sharp and the views great. From Hartland Point to Hartland Quay, the walking becomes much tougher again with several steep climbs, but the compensations provided by the scenery make it worth the effort!.
