Middlesbrough to Hartlepool
(Our overall day number 36 - Part of The KC3 ECP Leg 55 and 56a - Middlesbrough to Seaham)Middlesbrough to Hartlepool
12th August 2023 | Miles 16.3 | Elevation gain 163ft
A 16.5 mile walk from the Transporter Bridge, near Middlesbrough station, along the banks of the Tees as far as Newport Bridge, across the Tees and then along stretches of main road, back to the north side of the Transport Bridge, and then north for nearly four miles along roadside paths. The path reaches the sea at North Gare and then it's along the seafront and prom through Seaton Carew and into Hartlepool
Ever Again?
Never again - in fact we wouldn't have done it once if it wasn't a box-tick!
Getting there and back
The day before the walk, we overnighted in Leeds, had an early start, drove around 1.5 hours to Hartlepool Station, from where we caught the train to Middlesbrough and walked just over 16 miles back to Hartlepool Marina.
Weather conditions
Overcast and a bit windy, with some showers
Walking difficulty
Easy - but long. And not much coastline to look at either!
The story of our day in photos

Hartlepool Station - at the start of the day, about to catch the train to Middlesborough
.jpg)
The Transporter Bridge in Middlesborough - it moves heavy stuff across the Tees, or at least did until 2019 - it's been closed for safety reasons since
.jpg)
Confirming it is actually the coast path - we didn't see much sea for the first twelve miles or so!

Newport Bridge - where the ECP crosses the Tees

Industrial Middlesborough

This path had just been cut when we walked along it - otherwise it would have been very heavy going
.jpg)
Looking back towards the Transporter Bridge - by this time we had reached the northern bank of the Tees

Working on clearing the path - just in time for our walk

Couldn't find a seat or any other lunch spot to save our lives, so we settled down in the middle of the path underneath this pylon. It started raining just after this pic was taken 🤣

Think that's a gas processing plant

Thankful for a boardwalk - we'd started to get wet feet before this appeared

That might be a factory making wind turbine stalks - on the A178 heading towards Seaton Carew - and hopefully the seaside

Seaside at last - at Seaton Carew. Greeted by a rainy squall and a rainbow!

Walking the prom at Seaton Carew

Nearly back to our our accommodation in Hartlepool Marina, 16 miles walked and keen to get the shoes off - but now thwarted at the level crossing

Lovely views across Hartlepool Marina from our apartment
