Just over 35 miles from the Transporter Bridge, near to Middlesbrough station, along the south bank of the Tees, across Newport Bridge, and then a long (and quite tedious) stretch along the road back to the north side of the Transporter Bridge, then more roadside walking all the way to Seaton Carew and Hartlepool. Heading out of Hartlepool, more roadside to reach The Headland
Day by day
How we approached this leg
We completed this leg over three days - on day 1, following an overnight in Leeds and an early start, we drove around 1.5 hours to Hartlepool Station, from where we caught the train to Middlesbrough and walked just over 16 miles back to Hartlepool Marina. On day 2, we walked from the marina, around The Headland, and on up the beach and then the cliff tops as far as Horden, from where we caught the train back to Hartlepool. On day 3 we caught the train up to Horden, resumed the walk north as far as Seaham - a combination of very wet weather and overgrown, in some place impassable, paths, meant we had to stop early, some 7 miles short of our intended destination of Sunderland.
Where we stayed
Hartlepool - we stayed in the new marina area, which has a variety of bars and restaurants.
