Tilbury to Pitsea

15th September 2024 | Miles 18.9 | Elevation gain 156ft

A 19 mile walk along the northern side of the Thames Estuary. Very industrial on the way out of Tilbury with long stretches pinned between the water and high barbed wired walls, then a pleasant-ish stretch for a couple of miles along the water near East Tilbury. Turned inland at the mile 6 marker to round the Mucking Marshes and that was the last we saw of the estuary :( A bit of interest at the London Gateway, followed by two miles of road, and then a final 6 miles of slightly (sometimes very) overgrown sea wall walking along Holehaven Creek, no elevation but uneven and tricky terrain to walk on
Getting there and back
We parked at Pitsea Railway station (RingGo app - no cash, £5 all day on Sunday, more expensive mid-week) - and caught the C2C train back to Tilbury, around 15 mins trip. It's just over a mile from Tilbury Town station to the International cruise Terminal where you can pick up the coast path
Weather conditions
Dry and mild - around 18 degrees
Walking difficulty
Easy - Quite flat BUT it was a long walk with some very uneven ground between London Gateway and Pitsea Station, we found the last few miles quite tough going

The England Coast Path resumes at Tilbury on the north side of the Thames
Near Port of Tilbury
Dating back to around 1800, this pub has seen a lot of changes in this area!
Looking back at Tilbury
Passing the container terminal - not much to see!
Not a walk for picturesque views
Hmm
Coalhouse Fort Park - welcome relief from the concrete walls!
Coalhouse Fort
Near East Tilbury - the path was taped off, but no diversion, so we just walked through
Heading inland to go round the Mucking Marshes
Near Stanford-le-Hope
London Gateway Port
Two miles along the A1014 to go round London Gateway Port
Stand off!
Passing a movable flood barrier on Vange Creek
Tough going on the terrain by this point - uneven, overgrown and lots of hidden holes
Not far from Pitsea - some stubble burning has taken place here!
Little near-impassable section, near Vange Wharf, just beside the A13
The A13
Final stretch towards Pitsea Station - end of a very long day 😥
