Conyer to Kingsferry Bridge

6th July 2025 | Miles 8.6 | Elevation gain 105ft

An 8.6 mile walk from Conyer, along the shore of The Swale, then a mile inland to cross Milton Creek on the B2005 bridge, and finally a rather industrial section past the paper mill at Kemsley and the power station at Ridham Dock, to finish the walk under the Kingsferry Bridge, the crossing point to the Isle of Sheppey
Ever Again?
The first four miles of this walk along The Swale were delightful - would be a 4-star! However the second half was much less pleasant - thumbs down for that bit
Getting there and back
We parked our car at Sittingbourne Station, caught the train one stop back to Teynham, walked the one and a quarter miles back up to Conyer to join the start of the path. Swale Station sits just before Kingsferry Bridge, and we caught the train from there back to Sittingbourne - trains are once an hour. Although you can see the train station from the approach to Kingsferry Bridge, allow some time to walk under the bridge and up round to the station, as it's longer than it appears - it was possible when we were there to shortcut to the station over the crash barrier, but best to follow the road up and back if you have time
Weather conditions
Damp at the outset, rain stopping and sun coming out later - less wind and pleasantly cooler than preceding days
Walking difficulty
Easy - flat and mostly well marked paths, as in previous days, the dry spell before our walk meant that some large cracks had opened in the ground which required some watchful stepping

The story of our day in photos

Heading up the track from Teynham railway station to Conyer to pick up the path
Odd perspective on the boatyard at Conyer!
Heading out from Conyer up towards the coast - The Sheppey Crossing is further away than it looks!
Conyer Creek, just north of Conyer

At the mouth of Conyer Creek, looking across the Swale to The Isle of Sheppey
Recent very dry conditions meant care needed on the path - especially for Ani The Dog
Waling up The Swale towards the paper mill and power station

Near Little Murston, the ECP signs are a bit confusing - this broken sign might've helped
Coast path sign points inland, but that's not where the path goes, it carries on along the coast
Wonder how long this wreck has been here?
Looking inland over the oyster pond, towards Murston
Woodland section, on the way inland to cross Milton Creek
Under the B2005 as it crosses Milton Creek
It's a few hundred yards around just to get onto the B2005 to cross the creek
Got there eventually
Walking past the paper mill - suddenly not so pleasant scenery and a bit of an industrial aroma
Probably not supposed to use the mobile phone to take pictures 😖
Today's walk becoming one star
Presumably this jetty serves one or more of the various bits of industry round here
Final push to finish the walk at The Sheppey Crossing
