Aust to Avonmouth
Overall day 87 · Part of Leg 1a – Aust to Sand Bay
16th August 2025
9.6 miles
71ft elevation gain
A 9.6 mile walk, starting at Aust. The northern end of the path offers views over the Severn Estuary to Wales and its two spectacular river crossings, heading south takes you to the industrial landscape of the Port of Bristol with its rich maritime history.
Ever Again?
The first part of this walk is pleasant enough and interesting - between the old and new Severn bridges, looking over the Severn Estuary. Everything becomes more industrial (and a bit smelly!) south the the new bridge and into Avonmouth

Getting there and back
There is no public transport to the start of the path at Aust and, with a poorly dog left behind, we had no option but to catch a cab. There is a bus option from Bristol to Chepstow and then walk back across the bridge, which extends the walk by around two miles.
Weather conditions
Very pleasant August day and not too hot
Walking difficulty
Easy - mostly flat, some overgrown paths towards Avonmouth
