2nd May 2026 13.7 miles 130ft elevation gain
A 13.7 mile walk, starting in industrial Avonmouth, then crossing the mouth of the River Avon on the M5 motorway bridge. The trail follows the mudflats and salt marsh of Portbury Wharf and its nearby nature reserve, a bit of a contrast to the endless new car storage lots. Parts of the walk have great views over the open estuary, to the distant hills of Wales across the water. We reached Portishead with its vibrant Marina, where we stopped for lunch. The trail then follows a rocky coastline under the cliffs through to the seaside town of Clevedon, and its pier which is known for its elegance.
Ever Again?
The M5 bridge and the car lots around Portbury Dock were industrial but interesting, and from there the walk through Portishead and onto Clevedon is very enjoyable.
