A 25 mile walk over two days, starting at Eastbourne Pier, along the prom and past the marina at Sovereign Harbour, and then a mix of shingle, low tide beach and promenade all the way past Normans Bay, Cooden and Bexhill to finish a long 14.7 mile first day at St Leonards. On the second day, we headed out through Hastings to the old town and then sharply upwards onto the top of the cliffs and spectacular coastline of the Hastings Country Park, with some more upping and downing! Eventually we descended into Fairlight Cove and then the appropriately named Cliff End, where the coast flattens out and it's a straight shot along the Pett Sea Wall to Winchelsea Beach.
Day by day

How we approached this leg
We walked this leg over two days, basing ourselves in St Leonards.
On day 1 we walked the flat section from Eastbourne Pier to St Leonards Marina, around 14.7 miles (a total of 15.5 counting the walk from the station to the coast either end). We left home early and parked in St Leonards near our accommodation, then completed the 0.6 mile / 13 min walk to St Leonards Warrior Square station, caught the train to Eastbourne (23 minutes) and then a 0.6 mile walk down to Eastbourne Pier. It would be possible to shorten this day, as from Normans Bay (around 6 miles from Eastbourne), the train runs quite close to the coast path in many places to provide drop in drop out points.
On day 2, we walked from our accommodation in St Leonards to Winchelsea Beach - 10 miles with around 1,300ft of ascent and descent. We then caught the 101 Wave bus back to Hastings from the Caravan Park bus stop, near Winchelsea Beach Café. We walked the mile back to St Leonards, but it would be possible to catch the 99 bus.
We had originally planned to walk a small distance to Rye on the morning of day 3 before heading home, but closed roads and no buses due to emergency broadband repairs scuppered our plans. This means we have 9 miles to fill in between Winchelsea Beach and Camber - we are currently planning to leave this til very last - it'll be our final walk to complete the England Coast Path in a few years time - returning to our start point at Camber Sands where we took our first steps in October 2021!
Where we stayed
We stayed in St Leonards, which we really liked. Not as busy or trendy as Brighton (or Worthing), but with tasty places to eat, a great promenade and some interesting architecture. Described by one review we saw as 'gently quirky'.
