Filey to Whitby
KC3 ECP Leg Number 54a
24th June 2024 – 26th June 2024
32.0 official miles
32.5 miles walked
Guest walkers:
Third time guest walker Jess
A 32 mile stretch along the North Yorkshire coast, mostly cliff top walking. From Filey, the path heads out towards Filey Brigg, and then along the cliffs for several miles to Scarborough, where there are a couple of miles on road round the castle, before re-joining the cliffs. The path climbs steadily all the way to Ravenscar, the highest point on this walk - although this bit is cliff top, in some places it feels a little enclosed between fences on the left and hedgerow on the right. From Ravenscar, it is a long and scenic descent into Robin Hood's Bay, from where the path climbs back up to finish with a spectacular section along open cliff tops, before descending into Whitby passing the Abbey en route.
Day by day
How we approached this leg
We walked this stretch over three days - from Filey to Scarborough on day 1, around 10 miles. On day 2, we walked from Scarborough to Robin Hood's Bay - a long day of 16 miles, but with no real public transport options in between. On day 3 we enjoyed a shorter walk along the cliff tops from Robin Hood's bay to Whitby.
Where we stayed
We stayed in Whitby, a popular seaside destination, famous for fish and chips, Captain James Cook and the abbey ruins which apparently inspired the story of Dracula. Attractive harbour and plenty of refreshment opportunities, but very busy every day we were there, even non-weekend days outside school holidays. Finding parking can be a challenge!

Stopped here early on our second days walking, heading out from Scarborough - coffee and a bacon bap

Around 13 miles into our longest (and hottest) day of walking, we didn't do any national trust things here, but the shop sold ice cream and soft drinks, very much needed by that point

A welcome refreshment stop, towards the end of our final days walking, just outside the Abbey and a few steps back down into the town

Whitby Abbey
We didn't go in due to the ridiculous prices they wanted to charge - you can see it from outside anyway and we had a lovely view of it from our accommodation.
